We are showing Brazilian IPE and Campeche bows at the workshop.
Campeche (Haematoxylum campechianum), traditionally known as logwood, has established itself in our workshop as a genuine alternative to Pernambuco (Paubrasilia echinata). Its tonal response, playability, and visual character are closely comparable, and our bowmakers have worked with it consistently for over three years, finding it straightforward and reliable throughout the making process. The species grows across the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico, where it is endemic, in a tropical climate similar to that of Pernambuco. This shared ecology is likely reflected in the wood’s mechanical properties. We source directly from Mexico, where Campeche has been harvested commercially for decades under government regulation as a tree of recognised economic interest. Unlike Pernambuco, Campeche is not endangered and carries no CITES restrictions, making procurement legally straightforward and supply consistent.
