Restorer / Instructor

Stacey has worked independently in the restoration and repair of violin family instruments since 1995. From her shop in Western Massachusetts, she serves clients from throughout the northeast and beyond. Along with providing repair and restoration services, she works directly with string players in fine adjustments for tone and performance.

Stacey has studied advanced restoration techniques in the UK and the US, but credits Hans J. Nebel, with whom she studied for many years, for instilling a high standard of excellence in restoration, and a deep appreciation for a finely honed edge.

She’s been a member of the American Federation of Violin and Bow Makers since 2008, when she was the first restorer to submit work under the new guidelines allowing for the application of restorers who are not new makers. She has an abiding interest in exploring the sensibilities that go into being a restorer of things, rather than a maker of things. She is the author of restorersmind.com .

Stacey has tutored aspiring violin restorers both formally and informally. She has mentored through the Fellowship program offered by Women in Lutherie, and she has taught Retouching, and Crack Repair classes at Learning Trade Secrets. She’s been a contributor to Strad, Strings, and the Scroll. She has been a guest luthier at CTC Rare Violins in Taipei and is currently visiting luthier for the Iceland Symphony Orchestra in Reykjavík.
